What I was looking for was the ability to keep an important post on the first page for a few days and to have some control over it. With the WP_Sticky plug-in, I can control how long the post remains on the first page. Let me explain how this is achieved in this video tutorial.

With the WP_Sticky plug-in, there are three settings, sticky posts, announcements posts, and the normal post setting.

‘Announcement posts’ are posts which will appear at the top of the page and stay there until the setting on the WP_Sticky plug-in are changed to Sticky or Normal.

Using the ‘Sticky posts’ setting, the post will only stay on top of all the posts for one day only.

Hopefully the following example will demonstrate the different settings:

Announcement
- Post 5 (Announcement Post)

29th Jan 2011
- Post 6
- Post 7
- Post 8

28th Jan 2011
- Post 4 (Sticky Post)
- Post 1
- Post 2
- Post 3

As you can see, Post 4 is set to a ‘sticky post’ and will stay on top of all posts that are posted on 28th Jan 2011 ONLY.

Posts that are posted after 28th Jan 2011 (eg. 29th Jan 2011) will be posted on top of the sticky post that was posted on 28th Jan 2011.

For Post 5, the ‘announcement post’, will stay on top of all posts until this setting is changed to either normal or sticky.

Broken Link Checker – quite a simple trick with this plugin, it trawls through your posts and pages and detects links that are no longer working. Why? Well the aim is to prevent dead links in your posts, which can ruin your reputation with your readers and get you penalised with the search engines.

FeedBurner FeedSmith – every blog needs an RSS feed – it generates more traffic. But by signing up to Feedburner and using this plugin to direct all RSS feeds via Feedburner, you can then see just how many people are using your RSS feed and which posts are proving the most popular.

Limit Login Attempts – a very simple security plugin. If someone is trying to hack into your blog using brute force then this plugin detects their attacks and stops their attempts. It can email you with a warning and block them out for however long you want.

Revision Diet – if you are like me then this plugin is essential! I will write a post and save it, read it and then save it, read it again and so on. If I am not careful then I can have dozens of versions of each post, which rapidly fill my database. This post just gets rid of all of those extra versions of the post that you don’t need.

WordPress.com Popular Posts – I do not like just linking to recent posts on my side navigation, I prefer to link to the most popular posts. These are posts that people are reading more than other posts and therefore, are more likely to be interesting to other readers.

WordPress.com Stats – needed in order to run WordPress.com Popular Posts, but it also collects a load of important traffic data and displays in real time. Even if you use Google Analytics, it is a good idea to have a second tracking tool for when the traffic stats look funny (plus, it can exclude your own views!).

WordPress Database Backup – every blog must be backed up and this does the job. What would happen if you accidentally deleted something or found that your blog had been hacked and had to rebuild it? This tool emails you a backup at whatever frequency you want it to.

WP Captcha Free – Akismet is great, but it still leaves you having to check that the spam comments are spam and the real comments are real. Well this plugin all but cut out comment spam on my blogs by timestamping the form when it is first collected. Spammers keep submitting with the old timestamp and their comments are deleted. Genuine visitors get a new timestamp when they open the page and their comments get through.

Yet Another Related Posts Plugin – another great plugin for traffic and simple to install. If a reader has made it to the bottom of the post and probably taken it all in, then give them some similar posts to read next. This makes your site ‘stickier’.
